A cold and frustrating month of May

It’s rained every weekend this month and nights were in the 40s into the middle of the month. No planting again this weekend, but we have organized our donated seedlings and they will all be distributed by next weekend!

We had a great day on the Saturday before Mother’s day and made a lot of progress. A bunch of our new gardeners came and tackled the remaining highbush cranberries along the fence. Hello, more raspberries and strawberries!

We’re off and running

We spent a few hours at the garden this morning. Brian trimmed the raspberries and roses and planted the new hydrangea we got from the Macy’s Flower Show. I planted about 200 forced daffodils from the Flower show with the help of a young neighbor named Kai, who uses the trail and enjoys the garden. (See Flickr stream for more photos.) Thanks, MN Green for the new plant material. Several gardeners have started planting cool season crops. We hope the water will be on next week!

Tales of Hoffmann: A Picnic Operetta

Sunday September 12^th at 4:00 pm

(to be followed by annual Watch the Glow event)

In Jacques Offenbach’s masterwork our hero is a globetrotting poet following his romantic whims across Europe encountering fantastical adventures with robots, evil magicians and ghosts. From Paris to Athens, audience members eat their way through the story, savoring a five-course sampling by chef Nick Schneider as we bring together the live dining experience with classical music and horticulture.

In anticipation of these performance we are offering

An Informal Preview and Discussion Illuminating Jacques Offenbach’s masterpiece Tales of Hoffmann

Wednesday September 1^st at 7:00pm at the Former Weequah Canoe Club

1492 East Shore Drive on Lake Phalen in St. Paul

The evening will include selections from the opera and a panel discussion about the genre led by Professor William Beeman, Chair of the Department of Anthropology and a professional opera singer. The collaborative team behind Tales of Hoffmann: A Picnic Operetta will be present to speak about their work at the intersection of classical music, horticulture, community gardening and performance.

Light refreshments and beverages designed by collaborating Chef Nick Schneider will be offered

The Parade of Community Gardens is this Saturday. We are #51 on the map and we have some great things planned. Aunty Oxidant will be cooking up some tasty treats with our garden produce and bringing her veggie-friends to help. We also hear that the Breast Cancer 3-Day walk will be passing by again. We will have our tent up and decorated, so come down, see the garden and help us cheer on the walkers and give away cherry tomatoes!

Thanks to all the gardeners that came out today to get the garden tidied up. We got rid of a lot of weeds and dead blooms, spread a lot of mulch and cleared more space by the fence. Here’s one of our happy faces!

The vegetables of our labor

We are starting to harvest vegetables from the garden. We had our first zucchini for dinner last Friday. Kathy was out picking beans last night. But I’m starting to get tomato fever. We got so many great heirloom tomato seedlings from Jennifer and from Hennepin Tech this year. One of them is Golden Girl, which I was not too enthusiastic about until I saw this article and recipe today. Now I am so glad I planted one so I can try this.
